About Optical Interconnects Conference 2013 (OI Conference 2013)

The IEEE Photonics Society Optical Interconnects Conference builds on 22 years of the Society's successful Workshop on Interconnections within High Speed Digital Systems, and brings together researchers and engineers from multiple disciplines to discuss advanced interconnect technologies for applications at all levels of computing granularity from the chip to the enterprise. This conference covers the full spectrum of high performance interconnect challenges in interconnect systems, architectures, applications and devices, with a particular emphasis on future petascale and exascale platforms in datacenters and supercomputers. It is comprised of invited talks of the highest caliber in addition to refereed oral and poster contributions. In addition, all attendees have the option to participate in working groups to discuss and design a conceptual solution to a predefined design problem. This problem is intended to promote interactions between the participants and provide an overall focus to the meeting.  The problem working groups have been a unique feature of past HSD workshops.

Moore's Law has set market expectations that the performance of information technology will improve exponentially for at least another decade. Although the physics of silicon transistors alone might allow these expectations to be met, the physics of the electronic interconnects that cross and connect packages, boards, and racks almost certainly will not. Global level interconnects incorporating discrete and integrated photonics compatible with current microelectronic platforms holds the promise of revolutionizing computing by enabling unprecedented performance and ease of use with affordable power consumption. But steering the computer industry toward interconnect architectures that incorporate photonics in and between processors, memory, blades, storage, and servers will require a nontrivial collaboration between government, academia, and multinational semiconductor and information technology companies.  The IEEE Photonics Society Optical Interconnects Conference is intended to foster this collaboration and help drive new interconnect architectures and technologies.
